The
Adelaide Jewish Community comprises of approximately 1500 people. About
800 people participate actively through the two religious congregations
: the Adelaide Hebrew Congregation (Orthodox) and the BeitShalom
Synagogue (Progressive).
It is estimated that there are
an additional 1000 people who are born Jewish but do not chose to
identify themselves and affiliate in a very limited manner. Eighty
percent of Jewish community members are from non-English speaking
backgrounds. Many community members arrived in Adelaide after World War
II from Europe.
A significant proportion of Jewish migrants arrived in the 1950's from Egypt and are French speaking.
Recent waves of migration have brought Jewish migrants from the former Soviet countries.
There
are a diverse range of languages spoken within the South Australian
Jewish Community including French, Russian, Ukraine, German, Polish,
Hungarian & English.
Historically, the South Australian Jewish Community has been a small
community with the majority of people living within the metropolitan area
mostly within the eastern suburbs, with others living within the southern
& western council areas.
The Jewish Community has a wide range of social
and religious activities available. JCS conducts senior groups on regular
basis. These include Exercise, Walking, Entertainment, Art and Craft,
English Language Classes, Russian Speaking Group. A musical appreciation
group will start from August 2006.
In May 2006 a new group was initiated by JCS to encourage networking among young people.
Please contact JCS if you would like further information about any of these groups.
